Daniel McGarry

I was born in Fairfax, VA and raised in West Linn, OR. My immediate family is from the East Coast, but I was raised on the West Coast, and my mom's family is mostly in Puerto Rico. So you could say I was raised with a lot of different cultures, to say the least.

I majored in Communication Studies at the University of Portland and graduated in 2017. My sophomore year, I landed a job at Pilots After Dark as a Marketing Coordinator for two years. I managed their social media and did some basic graphic design work through Photoshop.

I left that position my senior year for one that required more responsibility: Marketing Coordinator at Campus Program Board. I used social media to promote large-scale events, including Rock the Bluff, an annual concert attended by over 3,000 students. I managed a small team of creatives to design and execute a marketing plan. By the way, the artists for that year were DNCE and Coleman Hell and I'm taller than Joe Jonas, in case you were curious.

During that position, I also started an internship that grew to a part-time position at Collexion, Inc. A small Portland start-up, Collexion aggregated collectibles from online into one, searchable database. I was part of a small marketing team where I managed social media, researched collecting communities and created marketing plans for the team. I also learned that people collect vintage washing machines during my research, which is pretty cool.

When I approach social media, my main goal is to humanize the brand. Social media is about a constant conversation with your audience, both to inform and to reassure them. One of the most effective storytelling techniques is having an audience that can relate. It's hard to relate one person to an entire company, but it's much easier when a person can see themselves with the brand. I use social media so people can see themselves in whatever brand I'm promoting.

If my experience and work interest you, let's get to know each other a little better. Here's my resume if you're interested, or you can email me at the link below.
